When it comes to laying resin bound or bonded paving, weather conditions play a crucial role in ensuring a successful installation. Unfavorable weather can have a detrimental impact on the curing process and the overall durability of the surface.

#1 Rainy or wet weather

Rainy or wet weather is one of the most critical weather conditions to avoid when laying resin bound and bonded paving. The presence of moisture can interfere with the curing process and negatively affect the bond between the aggregate and the resin. When the surface is wet, it becomes challenging for the resin to adhere properly, leading to weak spots and potential failures in the future.

During rainy or wet weather, water can seep into the mixture, diluting the resin and causing a weaker overall structure. Furthermore, if rainwater collects on the surface during the curing stage, it can create depressions and uneven areas on the paved surface. These imperfections can impact the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the paving, leading to increased maintenance and potential damage over time.

To mitigate the risks associated with rainy or wet weather, it is recommended to reschedule the installation to a dry period. Checking the weather forecast and ensuring a rain-free window of at least 24 to 48 hours is essential. It is crucial to remember that the substrate and the base layers must also be adequately dry before the installation begins to achieve optimal results

Moreover, freezing temperatures can lead to cracks and fractures in the resin, reducing its ability to withstand thermal expansion and contraction.

To avoid issues associated with extremely cold temperatures, it is crucial to install resin bound and bonded paving when the ambient temperature is above the manufacturer’s recommended limit. Typically, a minimum temperature of 5°C is required for successful installation. Using temperature-controlling measures such as ground heating or protective covers can help maintain the ideal curing conditions in colder climates.

#3 High Humidity and Excessive Heat

High humidity and the excessive heat can also pose challenges during the installation of resin bound and bonded paving (and yes, even in England we can experience excessive heat!). In humid conditions, the moisture in the air can react with the curing resin, causing a cloudy or hazy appearance on the surface. Additionally, high humidity can prolong the curing time, leading to delays and potential complications.

Excessive heat, on the other hand, accelerates the curing process, making it difficult to achieve a smooth and even finish. The resin may become overly viscous, resulting in poor workability and an uneven spread of aggregates. This can lead to an inconsistent texture and compromised aesthetic appeal of the paved surface.
To ensure a successful installation, it is advisable to avoid laying a resin bound and bonded paving during periods of high humidity or extreme heat. Ideal conditions include moderate humidity levels (around 50-70%) and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. These conditions provide ample time for proper curing while allowing the installers to work with ease and achieve a high-quality durable finish.
