HMS 2020 Roundup

A look back at projects HMS have completed in 2020. From private driveways to local authority projects it has been a great year!
HMS 2020 Roundup

It would be fair to say that this year hasn’t exactly gone entirely to plan… however here at HMS we’re a resourceful bunch, and all in all it’s not been too bad, really!!

We were able to benefit in the relaxation of rules around the construction industry sector from April, and we’re also very pleased to say that helped in part by the government’s job retention scheme. This meant that we did not have to make the terrible decision to lose any staff members at all. So we’re all still here, with planning for 2021 well underway!

So just before our attention turns entirely to Christmas, here’s a quick roundup of some of our favourite projects of 2020…

Bull in the Oak – Hallam Reed
This spacious development offers generous plot sizes and equally large parking and access for vehicles, which has been completed using a contemporary and highly decorative Decra®Set resin bound paving, finished in a Devon Cream natural aggregate blend.

Supported by groundworks from Premier Road Surfacing, our resin bound paving has been installed to a depth of 20mm onto a permeable base to allow for a fully porous and SUDS compliant finish. This choice of paving not only looks impressive but will dramatically reduce the likelihood of standing water, ponding and frozen puddles in winter months, as water and air circulate freely though the product, naturally draining away without the need for unsightly or unnecessary additional drainage provision.

To create a uniform finish and further enhance the appearance of wide open spaces afforded by this development, all areas to an approximate total of 1,400m² were completed using the same colour of product, to include the communal access and private parking areas across the site. Our recently captured drone footage gives and an amazing birds-eye view of the project, which HMS completed within six days to drastically reduce the number of joints visible throughout the scheme. Our fully qualified and insured installation team worked solidly in some very warm temperatures to create one of our favourite jobs so far this year.

Winter House – S Brown Paving
This project has been one of the more challenging installations of the year, applied to possibly the most architecturally impressive site we have had the pleasure of working on in some time. The installation included ramps, turntables, changes in level, 90% of which was laid by hand.

A steel grey Decra®Set resin bound paving finish was chosen to replace an original gravel surfacing detail wrapping around the entire property and driveway, creating a contemporary and practical surface which appears to flow effortlessly not only around but also ‘under’ the property itself. The mid grey tones of the natural granite aggregate compliment the stark black panelling and large expanses of glazing which forms the outer shell of this truly one-off building. Working with S Brown Paving and Redbrook Construction, we’re very pleased with the end result.

Hunger Hill – Wilson & Scott
When we arranged to return to Hunger Hill in Poole, we were asked to complete the Decra®Stone resin bonded surface dressing and ‘surface around an art installation’. However, we weren’t initially expecting 110 small checker-plate slivers attached to the floor! Each one of these needed to be taped for protection, before hand-screeding binder individually followed by cleaning off any excess! A three day programme of painstaking detail finally saw the finished result for this large scale public realm enhancement project, and we hope you agree that the effort was well worth it.

The installation created by a local artist is a nod to the area’s historic and ever present maritime heritage, with the steel checker-plate giving the illusion of rope trailing along the floor. Our resin bonded paving offers a softer backdrop compared to the harshness of black tarmac, finished using a 2-4mm Amber Gold natural aggregate for long term durability and enhanced slip resistance for heavy duty foot traffic!

Greenwich Peninsula – CIK Construction
Working with our regular client and surfacing contractor CIK Construction, HMS returned to Greenwich Peninsula in July for a further 500m installation of Butterscotch resin bound paving. This was for the dedicated footpath section of the Thames Cycle Network which runs along the path of the Thames through Morden Wharf and Cutty Sark. This work is a continuation of a project we have been working on for several years, and it’s great to see how the development continues to take shape each time we visit. With unrivalled views of the Thames and Canary Wharf, this site is the perfect setting for our premium porous resin paving system.

From all at HMS we hope you have a happy Christmas and New Year 2021.
