The redevelopment, led by Oxford Direct Services (ODS), began in March 2024 and included the complete resurfacing of the street. Specialist surfacing contractor HMS played a key role, laying 700m² of durable, high friction surfacing to reduce slip hazards and enhance the visual appeal of the area, complementing Oxford’s architectural heritage.
The improvements were designed to encourage footfall to the city centre, including the famous Covered Market. The street’s new layout has already proved popular with residents and visitors alike.
Simon Green, Managing Director of HMS, highlighted the team’s contribution: “We’re proud that our work has helped Oxford City Council win this award. Our team worked efficiently to lay the surfacing with minimal disruption, creating a safer and more usable pedestrian space.”
The Type 1 cold-applied high friction surfacing used is specifically designed for high-traffic areas, providing both safety and durability to accommodate the increased pedestrian numbers.
The award was presented at the Oxford Preservation Trust Ceremony on 12th November 2025, recognising the collaborative effort that brought Market Street back to life.
