Resin surfacing is designed to be durable, attractive and relatively low-maintenance, making it a popular choice for driveways, paths, patios and commercial spaces. But while resin bound and resin bonded surfaces don’t require intensive upkeep, a little regular maintenance can make a significant difference to how they look and perform over time.
From routine sweeping to quickly dealing with stains, here are five simple ways to keep your resin surface looking its best.
#1. Sweep regularly to prevent build-up
One of the simplest ways to maintain resin surfacing is to sweep it regularly with a stiff broom. Leaves, soil, litter and other debris can accumulate on the surface, particularly during autumn and winter.
Removing debris helps prevent organic material from breaking down on the surface and reduces the conditions in which moss, algae and weeds can become established.
For resin bound paving, keeping the surface clear also helps maintain its permeability by preventing dirt and debris from clogging the small voids between the aggregate.
#2. Give the surface an occasional clean
Over time, general dirt and grime can affect the appearance of resin paving. An occasional clean can help restore its finish and keep the aggregate looking fresh.
For everyday cleaning, warm water and a mild detergent combined with gentle brushing will usually be sufficient. The area should then be thoroughly rinsed with clean water.
Pressure washing can also be used on many resin surfaces, but it should be carried out carefully. Avoid using excessive pressure or holding the nozzle too close to the surface, as this could damage the resin or loosen aggregate.
#3. Deal with spills and stains quickly
Oil, grease, food, drinks and other substances should be cleaned up as soon as possible. The longer a spill remains on the surface, the greater the chance of staining.
Start by removing as much of the substance as possible before cleaning the affected area with an appropriate mild detergent and water. Avoid harsh chemicals and solvents unless they have been confirmed as suitable for the particular resin system.
Prompt action is especially important for driveways, car parks and commercial areas where oil and vehicle fluids may come into contact with the surface.
#4. Keep on top of weeds, moss and algae
A correctly installed resin bound surface provides little opportunity for weeds to grow through from underneath. However, weeds can occasionally establish themselves on top of the paving when seeds settle in accumulated dirt or organic material.
Regular sweeping is therefore one of the best preventative measures.
Moss and algae may also develop in damp, shaded areas. Keeping the surface clean and treating growth early can prevent it from spreading and becoming more difficult to remove.
When using weed killers, moss treatments or cleaning products, always check that they are suitable for use on resin surfacing.
#5. Address damage before it gets worse
Resin surfaces are hard-wearing, but they aren’t completely immune to damage. Heavy impact, excessive loads, movement in the underlying base or damage from other works can all affect the finished surface.
Check your paving periodically for cracks, loose aggregate or localised damage. Small problems are often easier to repair when identified early rather than after water ingress or continued traffic has caused the affected area to deteriorate further.

The quality of the original installation is just as important. The correct substrate, drainage, resin system and installation method all contribute to the long-term performance of the finished surface.
