Why do some sites require no-dig methods?
There are currently around 10,000 conservation sites in the UK, made up of important historical buildings, landmarks, estates and environmental features.
The preservation of this ground is extremely important to ensure the longevity of each area for years to come, deeming them ‘no-dig’ sites to restrict construction, soil disruption, surfacing, utilities and other works.
Graveyards, some rural areas and woodlands can also be ‘no dig’ sites to protect the soil and preserve the roots of protected, indigenous species of trees, flora and fauna.
The benefits of no-dig surfacing
No-dig methods offer numerous advantages, including saving time and lowering the environmental impact, including:
- Reducing planning requirements. Without digging, specialist surfacing such as Decra®Flex can simply be laid directly on soil without passive support, reducing the need for extensive, drawn-out planning processes for local authorities and contractors.
- Preserving the soil structure. No-dig methods cause minimal soil disturbance, preserving natural fungal and earthworm networks that are beneficial for aeration and moisture retention. Preserving the soil structure also provides enhanced protection for tree and plant roots.
- Enhanced biodiversity and fertility. With better aeration and moisture, soil biodiversity increases, creating healthy, fertile layers of organic matter where organisms can breed and live.

- Minimising the release of carbon. Soil stores carbon, which can be harmful when released into the atmosphere. No-dig methods keep carbon in the soil rather than releasing it, protecting our environment from the effects of climate change.
How Decra®Flex works
HMS Decorative Surfacing’s Decra®Flex minimises the need for extensive ground works and digging, making it the ideal solution for no-dig sites. With only 50mm of paving required and no passive support needed, Decra®Flex can be laid on soil without disturbing its structure or habitats.
The permeable rubber and aggregate mix replicates the natural environment, allowing water to percolate through the soil as it would naturally. This enhanced drainage reduces surface water and helps protect against flooding, making it a great option for residential, leisure and tourist sites with heavy footfall.
Decra®Flex is slip-resistant and flexible, so it is often used for bridleways, walkways and paths designed to welcome joggers, cyclists, wheelchair users, pushchair users and walkers. Its flexible nature also makes it a good option for playgrounds, leisure and sports facilities and sites with added accessibility needs.
