Flashback Friday

As it’s coming up to our 30th anniversary, today we’re reminiscing about some of our best projects completed since we founded HMS in the early 90s … when tie-dye t-shirts and shell suits were all the rage!
Flashback Friday - A look back on decorative surfacing projects

2009 – 7 JULY MEMORIAL, HYDE PARK, LONDON

Hyde Park Memorial - Resin Bound Surfacing

Located in the southeast corner of Hyde Park, the memorial is just north of Achilles to the east of Lovers Walk.

The memorial comprises 52 stainless steel pillars set in resin bonded surfacing laid by HMS.

The hard-wearing properties of resin bonded surface dressing allow visitors to walk around the memorial without fear of damaging the surfacing and being low maintenance, it ensures the memorial will continue to make an impact for years to come.

2012 – NEW WALK, LEICESTER

New Walk Resin Bonded Surfacing

HMS installed the public footpath to Leicester City’s pedestrian route at New Walk.

As part of the long-standing maintenance contract, we regularly return to complete repairs to the damaged surfacing as a result of utility trenches, new and removed street furniture, accidental damage and any other repairs that may be required to keep the decorative areas of the city looking their best.

Our Amber Gold resin bonded paving has been a staple Leicester City product for many years due to its natural finish, plentiful availability and unrivalled longevity in a commercial/public environment.

2012 – THE CUBE, BIRMINGHAM

Resin Bound Surfacing at The Cube in Birmingham

Inside the building’s courtyard atrium area is an exclusive installation by HMS. The blue-green sphere of resin bound flooring comprises of various shades of recycled glass and decorative aggregates.

2013 – NATIONAL MEMORIAL ARBORETUM, STAFFORDSHIRE

Decra®Stone resin bonded surfacing
The Arboretum welcomes over 300,000 visitors to the site each year, so it was important that the surfacing chosen was not only in keeping with the memorial but could withstand the impact large audience footfall naturally brings to the memorial.

2014 – BRIZE NORTON AIRFIELD, OXFORDSHIRE

Coloured Surfacing - RAF Norton

The station is home to RAF’s strategic and tactical air transport and air-to-air refuelling forces. In 2014, we laid bespoke resin bound paving in bright blue to match the Royal Air Force Blue.

2014 – FORTY HALL, ENFIELD

Decra®Stone resin bonded courtyard

Forty Hall is a Grade 1 Listed Jacobean Manor House, nestled in leafy Enfield where HMS were approached to lay resin bonded surfacing as part of the regeneration of the café courtyard area.

Resin bonded surface dressing enabled us to ensure the surfacing was in keeping with the heritage of the building. Not only does it look great and is in keeping with its surroundings, but it’s also incredibly hard-wearing so will remain looking great, even with thousands of visitors coming to see this iconic Manor House.

2015 – WOODROW HOUSE, SURREY

Decra®Stone resin bonded driveway

HMS was appointed to lay resin bonded surfacing to the driveway of this impressive multi-million-pound mansion. I think we can all agree it looks great and matches the building and landscaping alike.

2015 – LEOMANSLEY MANOR, LITCHFIELD

DecraSet Outdoor Resin Bound Surfacing - Leomansley Manor Driveway & Paths

HMS was appointed to lay resin bound surfacing to this impressive driveway as well as the landscaped footpaths throughout the garden.

2015 – KIDBROOKE VILLAGE, GREENWICH

Decra®Set bound-barley beech footpath

250 m² of SUDS-compliant decorative resin bound surfacing was installed on pathways running through the communal gardens.

2016 – KENSINGTON GARDENS, KENSINGTON

Decra®Stone resin bonded amber gold path

Due to the natural colours available with resin bonded paving, it is often a choice for many large-scale projects such as this.

It has the appearance of loose stone, but with contemporary benefits such as long-term durability and ease of maintenance … all making it the perfect surfacing to surround the pond in Kensington gardens.

2017 – THE LONDON WALL, LONDON

Resin Bound Decra Set London Wall

More than 1,000 m² of bespoke Decra®Flex paving – a specially designed variation of our classic resin bound surfacing, Decra®Set – to a suspended footbridge high above the city.

2019 – THE ROSE GARDEN, REDCAR

DecraSet resin bound local authority Rose Garden Project at Redcar

HMS hand laid resin bound paving for a special Rose Garden project for a local authority using specialist coated red aggregate.

Situated on Lakes Avenue, adjacent to Redcar Racecourse is The Rose Garden, a fabricated area using man-made materials to create decorative rose flower shapes.

In keeping with the roses themselves, all the surrounding area has been similarly surfaced using the same SUDS compliant porous paving product but using a completely natural golden aggregate to give a uniform yet strikingly contrasting finish.

At a total surface area of around 130m², this project is possibly one of the most intricate designs HMS has ever completed and makes an absolutely massive difference to the area.

2019 – THE RIVER GARDENS, GREENWICH PENINSULA

The River Gardens, Greenwich - Resin Bound Surfacing

The River Gardens is a large-scale development of apartments, retail and leisure facilities in Greenwich, overlooking the Thames.

Due to the prestigious location and abundance of regular and visiting users, the material chosen for this stretch of the adoptable route has been specified to the highest level.

HMS has completed the footpath and cycleway surfacing, using a bespoke blend of naturally sourced aggregates, including stunning green ‘Alpi Verde’ marble, obtained directly from its original source in Italy!

The vibrant green marble cycle route sits directly against the pale gold of the quartz footpaths, together creating a seamless, ultra-contemporary and porous resin bound paving system.

2020 – HUNGER HILL, POOLE DORSET

Resin Bonded at Hunger Hill in Poole

We were asked to complete the Decra®Stone resin bonded surface dressing and surface around an art installation. However, we weren’t initially expecting 110 small checker-plate slivers attached to the floor! Each one of these needed to be taped for protection, before hand-screeding binder individually followed by cleaning off any excess!

A three-day programme of painstaking detail finally saw the finished result for this large-scale public realm enhancement project, and we hope you agree that the effort was well worth it.
The installation created by a local artist is a nod to the area’s historic and ever-present maritime heritage, with the steel checker plate giving the illusion of rope trailing along the floor.

Our resin bonded paving offers a softer backdrop compared to the harshness of black tarmac, finished using a 2-4mm Amber Gold natural aggregate for long-term durability and enhanced slip resistance for heavy-duty foot traffic!

2022 - GET DONCASTER CYCLING, DONCASTER

Get Doncaster Cycling Scheme - DrcraFlex - Cycle Lanes, Footpaths and Bridleways

The Get Doncaster Cycling Strategy was first adopted by Doncaster Council in 2013, which resulted in considerable investment in the cycling infrastructure, support and events across the Borough.

As part of the new Strategy, Doncaster Council wanted to extend its cycling lanes in Edlington and HMS was employed by the main contractor, Derek Lewis, to install surface dressing.

Decra®Flex was the surfacing of choice as it killed two birds with one stone! Not only does it meet sustainability KPIs through its flexible, porous and recycled rubber properties, but it also provides a smooth, low maintenance and flexible surface, making it the perfect choice for cycle lanes, footpaths and bridleways.

Using rubber from recycled tires means the paving will always contain black, but Doncaster Council chose to include a gold element to the finish with a 50:50 mix of recycled rubber and Cornflint aggregate … we think this really made it pop!

2022 – NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENT, BLENHEIM PALACE

Pye Homes Developments, Blenheim Palace, Resin Bound Surfacing

Overlooking Blenheim Estate, Park View gives residents access to 12,000 acres of the Estate and as such, wildlife is encouraged.

We were appointed by M&J Evans Construction and Groundworks to lay approximately 900 m2 of resin bound paving to the public open space (POS) footpaths. With the consideration for wildlife and the community, resin bound paving seemed the most obvious choice.

Its hard-wearing, low maintenance and porous qualities certify it a SuDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) compliant paving solution. Not only does it reduce the risk of flooding, but it filters water and therefore, reduces pollutants entering our streams, rivers and lakes.

The aggregate chosen was Spring Walk, which complements the Cotswold natural stone, used for many of the houses in the development and for other houses in the area. I think we can all agree that the team did a great job!

2022 – SOUTH WEST LANDS REGENERATION, WEMBLEY

Wembley

The South West Lands plot is adjacent to Wembley Stadium and forms part of the regeneration project for the area.

For the first phase of three, HMS was appointed by CIK Construction on behalf of McAleer & Rushe to lay resin bound surfacing to the eighth-floor roof garden.

Installed using Golden Gravel, this resin bound porous paving really compliments this prestigious housing development project.

Over the years, we have had the pleasure and privilege to work on some amazing projects, which are set to continue in 2022 … and we can’t wait. If you’re looking for a due diligent, hardworking team with any of the surfacing options we provide, please contact us or call 01858 881111.
