‘Flexi-Joint’ has been very successfully adapted to solving the problems of reflective cracking which manifests in bituminous surfacing overlays on concrete pavements. ‘Flexi-Joint’ is a registered proprietary bridge expansion joint which has been proven with the UK overseeing bodies and its adaptation to surfacing repairs has been very successful.
‘Flexi-Joint’ is particularly effective for treating deep reflective cracks in asphalt overlays. A parallel pair of saw cuts are prepared at outer extremities of the damaged area, cutting back into sound construction and the failed pavement is removed. ‘Flexi-Joint’ should be ideally installed to the full depth of the bituminous surfacing, however a maximum depth of 250 - 300mm is recommended.
‘Flexi-Joint’ is installed in layers into the prepared trench, with a combination of polymer modified bitumen and selected coarse aggregates. Thorough compaction of the polymer modified compound is essential and finally, a bituminous surface screed provides the new running surface. This can be dressed with fine aggregate for increased skid resistance.
