‘Asphaltic Plug Joints’ were developed in the 1970’s from a need to replace failed expansion joints and in many cases the adjacent road surface was breaking up when the traditional buried or rigid joint systems began to fail. Many thousands have such joints have been installed on elevated sections of the M6 Motorway and the Midlands Links and throughout the UK.
The key benefits of the ‘Asphaltic Plug Joint’ system is the ingenious use of what is easily described as a ‘super-flexible’ surfacing material. Polymer modified bitumen is carefully combined with selected road aggregates and the resulting ‘asphaltic plug’ design provides: -
- A superior flexibilised replacement road surfacing material
- A compound which bonds to the bridge deck
- A waterproof expansion joint design
HMS compliments its extensive range of surfacing solutions with its expertise in polymer modified bridge expansion joints. In 1998, HMS was granted approval to install 'Asphaltic Plug Joints' on all classes of highway in the UK.
